Shanghai Leader Catalyst Co., Ltd. was established in 2000 by Sinopec Maoming Petrochemical Company and Shanghai Research Institute of Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as SRICI) under the model of Institue-Enterprise cooperation, with the mission to break the monopoly of catalysts suppliers abroad. On January 8th 2001, Shanghai Leader was formally registered and invested by SINOPEC, SRICI and SINOPEC Maoming at an original share proportion of 40%, 40% and 20% respectively. With the business restructuring of SINOPEC Catalyst Company in 2004, Leader Company’s shareholding proportion changed into 60% shares held by SINOPEC and 40% shares held by SRICI. Located near the beautiful HangZhou Bay, mainly engaged in R&D and manufacture of polyolefin catalysts, which is the high-end product in the core petrochemical industry chain.

To better meet the growing market demand, in 2016, after 15 years of development, Shanghai Leader relocated and expanded manufacture plant, new production base has 9 polyolefin catalyst production lines, 1 set of modular catalyst feeding system, supporting exhaust gas treatment system, utility system, fire security protection system. Shanghai Leader’s production technology is eco-friendly, concise, efficient, and capable of self-development and industrialization.

The number of customers and sales volumes of Shanghai Leader are growing rapidly in recent years, major customers include SINOPEC, CNPC, CNOOC and other large-scale chemical enterprises in coal & chemical industry, moreover. Shanghai Leader developed overseas business in various regions and countries such as Middle East, Indonesia, Philippines, South Korea, Singapore, the United States, India, etc.

Since the Company’s establishment, Shanghai Leader has been insisting on the process of carrying out scientific and technological innovation. Taking technological R&D innovation and talent cultivation as the Company's development goal. The team is led by polyolefin catalyst specialists, industrialization development specialists, focusing on scientific research, analysis, production process, equipment development, engineering development, catalyst application and other professionals, which is form of full-time research and development specialists, engineering technology research and development specialists, and product application technology development specialists. Focusing on new product development and engineering amplification, the teams actively explore and continue to lay a solid foundation of scientific and technological innovation, tackle challenges of key raw materials, core technology, green and clean production issues. The Company leads a number of supporting systems development; undertakes a number of catalyst quality continuous improvement projects, raw material development projects and analytical method establishment, which has vigorously promoted the optimization and upgrading of catalyst product performance and the R&D of new catalysts.

Based on the development needs of national key industries and regional pillar industries, the Company focuses on the essential issues of industrial technology innovation, carries out cooperative research with different scientific research institutes, breaks through the core technology of industrial development, and continuously improves the ability of transformation of R&D achievements, ensures that the new technology to be industrialized within shortest period, launches to market and serve customers.

Development process

In 2000

Based on the cooperation between institutions, enterprises and specialists, the company implemented the preparatory work for polyethylene catalyst industrialization project, such as feasibility study, amplification, test, design, site selection, and submission of approval and construction. The company was established in 2000, and held the meetings of shareholders, the first board of directors and the first board of supervisors

In 2001

Completed business registration with a registered capital of 20 million yuan. The company started construction and completed the first line of 40-ton/year SCG catalyst production within 100 days, which was successfully gone in to operation in Maoming Petrochemical for the first time, which was realized as the Leader Miracle of construction, production, successful application, and profit sharing in the same year.

In 2002

The SCG-1 catalyst was awarded the first prize for Sinopec Scientific and Technological Progress. The new gas-phase polyethylene catalyst was awarded the silver prize in the Shanghai International Industrial Expo.

In 2003

The SCG-1 (I) catalyst has been successfully applied in overseas markets (Indonesia, Malaysia) for the first time. The SLC-S catalyst has been successfully industrialized for the first time in Yangzi Petrochemical. SLC-G catalyst first produced and successfully tested in Tianjin Petrochemical

In 2004

The company held the polyethylene catalyst application technical exchange conference in in Nanjing and Huangshan for the first time.
The gas phase high-efficiency polyethylene catalyst has won the second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award.
The company's shareholding has changed, with Sinopec holding 60% and Shanghai Institute of Chemical Technology holding 40%.

In 2005

The first set of self-developed slurry catalyst feeding system has been delivered to Maoming Petrochemical for production. Catalyst products have been industrialized tested in Libya, Opening up the Middle East and North Africa market for the first time. Mr.Tsai pioneered the "one-stop" market service mode.

In 2007

Builded the fourth and fifth production lines, and expand the annual production to 300 tons. The SLC-B (25E) catalyst has been successfully tested in Shanghai Petrochemical. The product annual sales has exceeded 100 tons for the first time.

In 2008

Participated in the development of domestically produced gas-phase polyethylene technology and collaborated with SEI to develop a slurry catalyst feeding system.

In 2009

The Innovene process catalyst has been awarded the Shanghai Torch Plan project. The sixth production line for imported slurry catalysts was completed and put into operation. The operating revenue exceeded 100 million yuan for the first time.

In 2010

The SLC series catalyst won the first prize of Science and Technology in Shanghai.

In 2011

The domestically produced slurry catalyst SLC-S has been successfully tested multiple times in Shenhua Baotou, marking the company's first entry into the coal chemical market. Signed a contract for the transfer of 100 mu of Shanghai's state-owned construction land use rights with the Planning and Land Administration Bureau of Jinshan District, Shanghai, China.

In 2012

SLH-211-A, a new type of chromium catalyst, undergoes its first industrial application trial at GZPC First industrial application of SLT-1 catalyst in Tianjin Petrochemical and development of new products. Developed the Middle East market for the first time. The registered capital of the company was increased from CNY 20 million to CNY 80 million.

In 2013

SLH-711-A catalyst was successfully applied in Daqing Petrochemical for the first time. SLC-SP2 catalyst used for production of low-density, high-index polyethylene was successfully applied for the first time in Maoming Petrochemical and new products were developed to fill the gaps in the domestic market. China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation transferred 60% of its shareholding in Shanghai Leader to SINOPEC Catalysts Co. The feasibility study for the company's relocation, expansion and upgrading project was approved.

In 2014

The annual sales exceeded 200 tons for the first time. Laying the foundation, the company's overall relocation, expansion, and upgrading construction projects have commenced.

In 2015

Magnesium and titanium dry powder catalysts SLC-i and SLC-G catalysts were successfully tested for the first time at the BASELL Spherilence C polyethylene plant in the Middle East (LPC) SLC-SFJ catalyst was successfully applied in the coal chemical polyethylene plant of Ningxia Baofeng Energy Group for the first time. The two new production lines were handed over and successfully put into trial production, and the handover of the old and new bases was completed efficiently and safely based on the principle of synchronising production, relocation and construction. SLC-S catalyst was successfully applied in Shaanxi Pucheng, Zhongyuan Ethylene and Yanchang Petroleum. Operating income exceeded CNY 200 million for the first time.

In 2016

All the production lines in Qianyu Workshop were relocated, and all the seven production lines in the new workshop were put into operation. The new SLC-S slurry catalyst was successfully applied in China Coal Mengda.

In 2017

The company's registered capital increased from 80 million yuan to 20,000 million yuan. The company's profit exceeded 100 million yuan for the first time.

In 2018

Awarded the Shanghai High-tech Achievement Transformation Project "Top 10 Independent Innovation" in 2018.

In 2019

Improved SLC-S catalyst was successfully applied in Zhenhai Refining, which is a new breakthrough in the application of domestic catalyst in Zhenhai Refining. Won the 21st China International Industry Fair New Material Award Completion and acceptance of the vent gas VOCs treatment upgrading project, assuming environmental protection responsibility at a higher standard.

In 2020

SLH-511-A successfully tested for the first time in Malaysia SLH-511 and SLC-i catalysts were successfully tested in Dushanzi Petrochemical, opening up the PetroChina market for the first time. R&D and production of carrier-less SLS-100S catalyst was successful. SLC-S entered the Korean market, achieving breakthrough in the overseas market for slurry catalysts.

In 2021

The dry powder feeding system developed by the company was successfully tested in the start-up of Tianjin Petrochemical skid block. Metallocene catalyst was successfully tested in Ningxia Baofeng, which was the first trial of domestic metallocene catalyst in the loop process plant. The Company signed a catalyst PO with the Ukrainian customer, realising the first sale of this type of catalyst to the European market. SLH-511 catalyst and new type catalyst feed system MKQZ-V successfully assisted SINOPEC Zhenhai Base No.2 polyethylene plant to start up. The successful grid connection of the company's photovoltaic power generation project has effectively promoted the company to take important steps towards green and clean energy construction.

In 2022

The National Ministry of Industry and Information Technology announced the 2021 Green Manufacturing list, and Shanghai Leader Company was awarded the title of "National Green Factory". The company's technology center was awarded the title of "Enterprises Technology Center" in Shanghai. The company successfully signed catalyst POs with Russian customers in the form of RMB settlement, marking the official entry of the company's products into the Russian market. The company's SLH catalyst has been successfully applied in the industrialization of many customers at home and abroad, and the catalyst productivity has reached 400% of that of similar imported catalysts, ranking the world's leading level. The on-line switching test of metallocene catalyst under Tri-polymerization in Tianjin Petrochemical Company has achieved the first successful test in China. The construction and renovation of a production line with an annual output of 50 tons of high-density polyethylene catalyst, as well as the expansion project, was carried out with high quality.

In 2023

Shanghai Leader SLC-S catalyst and MKQZ-III feeding system helped Sinopec Hainan Refining and Chemical 1 million tons/year ethylene project to successfully start-up. SLH series chromium catalysts helped downstream customers successfully produce high-density polyethylene IBC, which has been recognized by the world's top IBC manufacturers and applied to the world's leading production chain. The company was awarded the title of National Specialized and Sophisticated "Little Giant".
